Hayate the Combat Butler
Oshimeter
Synopsis
All sixteen years of Hayate Ayasaki's life have been spent working to cover for his deadbeat parents. Then, on Christmas Eve, they abandon him with a debt of over 150 million yen and literally sell him to the yakuza. His escape plan? Accidentally stumble into the life of Nagi Sanzenin, a sheltered 13-year-old heiress to an obscene fortune. What starts as a desperate, ill-conceived attempt to solve his money problem spirals into a series of misunderstandings that end with Hayate employed as her personal butler. That's the setup, and the show runs with it for 52 episodes without losing steam. The humor leans heavily on parody — characters regularly acknowledge they're in an anime, reference other shows mid-scene, and wink at the audience constantly. If you enjoyed the meta comedy of Gintama or the chaotic harem antics of Kore wa Zombie Desu ka, this hits a similar nerve. The action is light but present, the romance is slow-burn and genuinely funny rather than awkward, and the cast of side characters who orbit Nagi's estate each bring their own strange energy. It's based on a long-running shounen manga, so the pacing is comfortable rather than rushed. Don't go in expecting a tight plot — this is a show about hanging out with ridiculous people in ridiculous situations, and it knows exactly what it is.
