Synopsis

For as long as he can remember, Chihiro Furuya has dreamed of having a zombie girlfriend. Not in a creepy way — well, maybe a little creepy — but the dude is genuinely obsessed with the undead. Zombie movies, zombie manga, zombie everything. When his beloved cat Babu gets killed in an accident, Chihiro digs up an old manuscript and starts experimenting with a resurrection potion at an abandoned building. That's where he meets Rea Sanka, a beautiful girl from a wealthy family who sneaks out at night to scream her frustrations into a well because her father's control over her life has become suffocating. The two start spending time together as Chihiro works on his potion, and things go in a direction neither of them expected. This 12-episode TV series from Studio Deen walks a surprisingly careful line between romantic comedy and genuine darkness. The ecchi moments are there, but what sticks with you is the atmosphere — there's a melancholy underneath the humor that gives it weight. Rea's family situation gets unsettling in ways you don't see coming. If you liked the zombie comedy vibes of Is This a Zombie? but wanted something more grounded emotionally, or if Shiki's horror elements appealed to you but you're in the mood for something with more romance, Sankarea sits in that sweet spot. It's comedic, romantic, and dark in roughly equal measure, and it doesn't waste its 12 episodes getting there.

The relationship between Chihiro and Rea might be blossoming but also looks symbiotic at the same time while a surprising but expected move by Rea's father with unexpected results.

This shows the trope that "childhood friends always lose in love" in most anime. Anyway, a rather weird childhood for Chihiro, but he still rises up to the occasion while showing how Ranko fell for him.

A great show of resolve by Chihiro to solve the condition of Rea while showing her a normal life as well. His grandfather, while incomplete, still was able to warn Chihiro about the effects of the resurrection drug and continues to find ways to preserve Rea.
