Synopsis
On the surface, Takaya Ougi looks like a regular high school kid who just wants to look after his best friend and get through the day — until a stranger named Naoe shows up and tells him he's the reincarnation of a feudal warlord named Lord Kagetora. Ancient samurai spirits are bleeding into the modern world, reigniting centuries-old conflicts, and Takaya apparently has the power to stop them. The catch: every other reincarnated possessor remembers their past life. Takaya doesn't. So he's being handed this enormous supernatural responsibility while having zero context for who he supposedly was — and Naoe, who clearly has a complicated history with Kagetora, isn't exactly rushing to fill in the blanks. The show is produced by Madhouse and based on a long-running light novel series, so there's real weight behind the world-building even in a 13-episode run. It leans into the tension between Takaya's present-day identity and the person everyone else seems to expect him to be, which gives the character drama a lot more texture than your typical spirit-fighting setup. If you've watched The Betrayal Knows My Name and liked the mix of reincarnation, brooding atmosphere, and emotionally charged male dynamics, this scratches a similar itch. Fans of Tactics who want something with sharper historical roots and a darker edge will also find a lot to like here. It's not a fast or flashy watch — it builds slowly and takes its relationships seriously.
