Lupin III Episode 0: The First Contact

Before he was anyone's right-hand man, Daisuke Jigen was just muscle for the Mafia and babysitter to a mysterious indestructible metal cylinder — until a charming thief named Lupin III waltzes in and changes everything. That's the setup for this TV special, which tells the origin story of the entire Lupin gang — how Jigen, Fujiko, and the stoic samurai Goemon all crossed paths for the first time and ended up tangled together around one artifact and a whole lot of bad intentions. The special is narrated by Jigen himself, which gives it this laid-back, retrospective feel — like he's recounting a story he still can't quite believe happened. Everyone's chasing the same thing for different reasons, Zenigata is bumbling in from the Japanese police force, and the whole thing plays out with that classic Lupin energy: stylish, a little absurd, genuinely funny without trying too hard. Yuji Ohno's jazz soundtrack runs underneath everything and keeps it feeling cool rather than dated, even for 2002. If you already love Lupin III, this is worth watching just to see these characters meet each other with fresh eyes. If you're coming from something like Cowboy Bebop or City Hunter and want more of that retro heist-and-chase vibe with a charismatic cast, this is a comfortable entry point. It's a single episode, so the commitment is minimal and the payoff is solid.
