Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Arc Review
_Demon Slayer_ wastes no time pulling you in. The episode opens with Tanjiro Kamado returning from town to find his family slaughtered by demons. Only his sister Nezuko survives, but she’s been turned into a demon herself.
What works immediately is the emotional weight. Tanjiro’s desperation to save Nezuko feels raw, not melodramatic. Ufotable’s animation elevates everything: the snow-covered forest looks cold enough to feel, and the contrast when Nezuko attacks is brutal and fast. The water effects during the demon slayer Giyu’s fight are already hinting at the show’s visual style.
The episode’s strength is its setup. In 23 minutes it establishes the stakes, Tanjiro’s kindness as his core trait, and the core conflict of demons vs. slayers. Nezuko still protecting her brother despite being a demon gives the story its hook — this isn’t just revenge, it’s family.
Weakness? The pacing rushes the tragedy. We barely know the family before they’re gone, so the grief leans more on music and Tanjiro’s reaction than our own attachment.
Overall, "Cruelty" is a strong pilot. It’s emotional, gorgeous, and makes you need Ep2 immediately. 8.5/10
