Cromartie High School
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Somehow ending up enrolled at Cromartie High, the most notorious delinquent school in the city, perfectly normal mild-mannered high school kid Takashi Kamiyama is about as far from a delinquent as you can get. He's not even particularly tough. He's just... there. And so is a gorilla. And a robot. And a guy who looks exactly like Freddie Mercury, who nobody seems to find strange at all. That's the whole joke, and it works every single time. Cromartie High is a 26-episode TV series built entirely on deadpan absurdity — the kind where the humor comes from characters treating completely insane situations with total seriousness. Each episode runs about 12 minutes, so it never overstays its welcome. It's punchy, weird, and surprisingly clever about how it parodies classic delinquent anime tropes without ever winking too hard at the camera. If you liked Nichijou's commitment to straight-faced chaos, or the dry observational humor in Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, Cromartie scratches a very similar itch but with a rougher, deliberately lo-fi edge that fits the delinquent setting. It's also a good companion piece to Azumanga Daioh if you want something slightly stranger and more deadpan. Don't go in expecting plot — there basically isn't one. Go in expecting a gorilla to be treated as a completely unremarkable classmate, and for that to somehow be funnier every time it happens.
