Synopsis

Armed with the ability to possess anyone for five seconds, Yuu Otosaka has been using this to cheat on exams, stealing answers from the smartest kids in class, and honestly he's kind of a jerk about it. He's gamed his way into a top high school and has zero remorse — until Nao Tomori, a sharp-eyed student council president who can turn invisible, catches him red-handed and drags him into a completely different school. Hoshinoumi Academy is a safe haven for teenagers with superpowers, and the student council's real job is tracking down other ability users before shady organizations get to them first. What starts as a mostly lighthearted setup with comedic missions and quirky powers gradually shifts into something much heavier. The emotional turns hit hard when they come, and this 13-episode TV series doesn't waste time getting there. P.A. Works brings their usual gorgeous animation, and Jun Maeda's soundtrack does a lot of the emotional heavy lifting — the guy knows how to make you feel things whether you signed up for it or not. If you liked the gut-punch moments in Angel Beats or the way Anohana slowly dismantled you, Charlotte operates in that same space. It's a drama about kids with powers who are way more vulnerable than they look, and it earns its quiet, devastating moments by letting you care about them first.
