Blue Sonnet

The cute art is deceiving — Blue Sonnet gets dark, and it gets there fast. Sonnet is a cyborg with psychic abilities, built and trained by a shadowy organization called Talon to be their perfect weapon. Her mission seems straightforward: transfer into a Japanese high school and quietly monitor a reserved girl named Lan, who may be carrying something dangerous inside her without even knowing it. Simple surveillance job. Except the moment these two start interacting, Lan's latent powers begin surfacing, and Sonnet — who has spent her whole life being treated as a tool — starts feeling things she was never supposed to feel. The five-episode OVA format keeps things tight, blending high school drama with genuinely intense action sequences. The contrast between the delicate character designs and the brutal psychic combat is a real visual statement. If you liked Elfen Lied's combination of quiet character moments with suddenly shocking violence, or Ghost in the Shell's questions about what it means to be human inside a modified body, this scratches a similar itch with a more emotional, character-driven focus. It's from 1989, so the production is vintage, but that late-80s aesthetic has its own charm. The story centers almost entirely on Sonnet's internal conflict rather than the action itself, which is where it actually lands its punches.
