Armored Trooper Votoms: Die Graue Hexe

Handing the director of Ghost in the Shell the keys to a Votoms anime is the kind of sentence that makes you sit up straight. The guy behind Ghost in the Shell bringing his slow-burn, atmosphere-heavy style to one of the grittiest mecha franchises ever made — that's not a combination anyone saw coming, but it makes a weird amount of sense. Haiiro no Hexe drops you into the Astragius Galaxy with a veteran Armored Trooper pilot who gets pulled into some kind of black ops situation that starts unraveling everything he thought he knew about the war he's been fighting. Early on he crosses paths with a woman tied to something much bigger than either of them, and the show leans hard into that conspiratorial tension. It's less about flashy robot battles and more about what happens to a soldier when the chain of command stops deserving trust. The mecha here are utilitarian, disposable, treated like military hardware rather than hero machines — which has always been the Votoms identity. If you liked Mobile Suit Gundam's war commentary but wanted something rawer, or if Fang of the Sun Dougram's political realism was your thing, this is in that lineage. Blue Gender fans who wanted more focus on the human cost of conflict will find something here too. Sunrise and Production I.G are co-producing, so it looks the part. But the real draw is Oshii's pacing and his tendency to let silence do the heavy lifting. This one's for the patient viewer.
